Shoulder Pain Q & A

What is shoulder pain?

The shoulder is your body’s most flexible joint. Healthy shoulders allow you to lift, rotate, and move your arms in many ways. When an injury or illness causes damage to your shoulder, you may experience pain. Shoulder pain can occur suddenly, like after an injury, or it may develop gradually. Pain may occur as a dull ache or sharp, stabbing sensation.

If shoulder pain limits your range of motion and keeps you from normal activities, physical therapist Priyanka Pandya can help.

What causes shoulder pain?

The most common cause of shoulder pain is rotator cuff tendinitis, also called shoulder impingement syndrome. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that provide stability and movement to your shoulder joint. Tendinitis occurs when one or more tendons becomes irritated and inflamed.

Other common causes of shoulder pain include:

  • Sports injuries, such as fractures
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Shoulder dislocations
  • Pinched nerves in the neck or upper back

In addition to helping you heal from your current condition, Priyanka educates you on steps to take to prevent shoulder pain from happening again.

  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization
  • Hot and cold packs

Priyanka also provides you with an exercise program to perform at home for continued improvement after you finish treatment at Reboot Physical Therapy. The number of treatments you need depends on the type and severity of your condition.
