Cupping Q & A

What is cupping?

Cupping is a therapeutic technique with roots in traditional Chinese medicine. This treatment involves using glass, ceramic, bamboo, or plastic cups to create suction on your skin. A practice called wet cupping also involves piercing the skin to let blood flow out. Dry cupping doesn’t pierce the skin.

During a cupping session, physical therapist Priyanka Pandya places cups on specific points on your skin. She creates negative pressure in the cup by either applying a flame to the cup beforehand or using a suction device after she positions them.

The negative pressure inside the cup creates a vacuum that gently draws your skin and muscle into the cup. This increases blood flow to the area beneath each cup, which may relieve muscle tension and encourage cell repair.

What is cupping used for?

Priyanka may recommend cupping as part of your individualized treatment plan if you suffer from muscle pain and stiffness, especially in your back or neck. Although cupping is a relatively new technique in Western medicine, studies suggest it may be an effective treatment for the following conditions:

  • Acne
  • Facial paralysis
  • Herpes zoster
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Cough and dyspnea
  • Lumbar disc herniation

Many athletes use cupping to relieve muscle spasms and enhance sports recovery.

What are the benefits of cupping?

In addition to relieving pain and releasing muscle tension, cupping promotes blood circulation and relaxes your nervous system. Relieving muscle tension also reduces anxiety and promotes overall relaxation and well-being.

Cupping has a detoxifying effect on your skin and circulatory system, which leads to clearer skin and improved blood flow throughout your body. It may also enhance your digestive system and provide relief from constipation.

What should you expect from cupping therapy?

First, Priyanka reviews your symptoms and medical history and evaluates your overall physical condition. If she thinks you may benefit from cupping, she includes this in your individualized treatment plan.

Before a cupping session, you remove any clothing that covers the treatment area. Then, you relax on the table as Priyanka places the cups. Usually, they remain in place for 5-10 minutes. She may also apply massage oil to your skin and slide the cups around.

Afterward, you have dark spots on your skin where the cups were placed. This should fade within 10 days. There are no serious side effects of cupping, but you may feel dizzy or lightheaded during or immediately after treatment.
