Whiplash injury is called as neck sprain or neck strain. In whiplash injury, neck muscles, cervical intervertebral discs, ligaments and nerve roots can be damaged. Whiplash injury is usually diagnosed with CT scan or MRI as soft tissue injuries cannot be diagnosed with an X-Ray.  Whiplash injury signs and symptoms can be delayed for 24 hours or more. Patient can start feeling symptoms after 1-2 days after the car accident. These are the following symptoms a patient can experience: neck pain, stiffness, numbness or tingling in the arms, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, sleeps disturbances, headaches, fatigue, or pain between shoulder blades. Whiplash injury can be treated with a medley of treatment together. The treatment includes pain medication, physical therapy and hot and cold treatment. Sometimes it is also treated with cervical immobilization and corticosteroid injections.

Physical therapy treatment plays an important role in whiplash injury treatment due to car accident. Physical therapy includes both passive and active treatment for the same. Passive treatment includes massage therapy that relieves the muscle tension and includes blood circulation, hot therapy helps increase blood circulation to provide more nutrients to the healing area and remove the waste byproducts causing muscle inflammation, cold therapy reduces inflammation and pain and muscle spasms. Active physical therapy includes exercises and stretches to strengthen and relax your muscles respectively, postural correction exercises. Physical therapy works really well for whiplash injury if combined with other form of treatment like medication.
